Ran into a bunch of interesting online workshops.
As part of its 2005-2006 Intellectual Property in Academia Online Workshop Series, the Center for Intellectual Property (CIP) at University of Maryland University College is offering two online workshops.
DRM in Higher Education, January 23 - February 3, 2006
Moderated by Kimberly Kelley, Ph.D., and by Clifford Lynch, Ph.D.
Topics to include:
- background and history of DRM;
- fact versus fiction in the realm of DRM;
- perspectives on and understanding of DRM within various communities;
- access, and control of copyrighted material in higher education;
- federal legislation impacting copyright compliance on college campuses.
Copyright and Academic Culture, February 20 - March 3, 2006
Moderated by Siva Vaidhyanathan, Ph.D.
- history of copyright law and how it has interacted with culture;
- the digital revolution and how it impacts the academy;
- varying perspectives in the debate over ownership, control, and access of material;
- pros and cons of current copyright policy and its application;
- explore the conflict between the “anarchists” and the “oligarchs” in their technological battle over control and access to the materials of culture.
The cost is fairly reasonable at $125 for early registration ($150 after that) and all work and course time seems to be online with a weekly workload of about 5 hours (according to the FAQ.)
And next week, we have a much smaller presentation by an organization called Tapped In which offers professional development opportunities for educators.

They have a full calendar of other professional development events on their web site (many—but not all—related to technology.)
