Going to 3GSM

After much debate and the kind offer of a discounted floor pass (thanks Wireless World Forum!)—we’re going to 3GSM. Bryan is coming along for the food, art and dolce vita that is Barcelona. I will wander around the show :-) And of course we’ll be going to the Mobile Monday Peer Awards event on the 12th.

Anyone want to meet up? (Ajit—any decisions on a Forum Oxford meetup?) Anyone from Canada coming?

New Years Eve Bombings in Bangkok

There’s been a series of bombings in the Thai capital. There’s little news or footage at this point but it seems one of the bombs exploded in the mall across the street from the building we lived in just last month.

The mall is attached to the Victory Monument BTS (skytrain) station and is always packed as it includes local restaurants, fast food, banks, an 8 screen cineplex, some language schools and a supermarket. The base of the mall also hosts an outdoor extension with vendors setting up every morning to sell fruit, noodles and cheap clothing. Next to the parking lot, there’s also an informal pickup spot for communters catching neighbourhood mini-bus/car-pool transport to Bangkok’s sprawling suburbs. And the huge Victory momument roundabout itself is the downtown transport hub for bus traffic from all over the city with tens of thousands of people transferring to and from busses or the BTS station upstairs every day.

Amazing then that so far it seems there are only two dead and 25 wounded. Some basic video footage and preliminary news are available for the moment on France 24 (in English.)

Such as sad thing for Bangkok.

BETT in London

I will be in London on Friday January 12th attending the somewhat legendary BETT (the British Educational Technology Show.) I’m really looking forward to it. The list of exhibitors is impressive and I’m looking forward to dropping in on several booths including FutureLab, Tribal CTAD (I’m dying to see their new mobile authoring tools) Wildkey, and Handheld Learning UK (who is apparently teaming up with Fujitsu Siemens to demo their new EDA handheld device especially designed for schools.)

Plus it’s my first time in London :-)

Carnival of the Mobilists (#50)

Carnival of the MobilistsThis installment of the Carnival of the Mobilists (#50) is hosted by the fine folks at MobHappy. Look for the post of the week from Michael Mace’s Mobile Opportunity Blog with some great commentary on the rise of the smartphone at the expense of the PC. Carlo has graciously paired Michael’s post with my recent entry about the PDA vs the Smartphone. Thanks Carlo!

Be sure to check it out!

Flood

I got the bright idea to go downtown this afternoon to buy dessert. The sky was black and there was thunder in the air so Bryan tagged along (can’t work anyhow—not safe to stay plugged in during lightning storms here.)

First it rained. Then it rained a lot. We could only see about a metre ahead of us while walking along the subway catwalk and the noise on the aluminum roof was truly deafening. The mall should be safe we said. Then the mall flooded. (New multi-billion dollar “Largest Lifestyle Mall in Asia”…LOL) Weird flooding at that. The ground floor seemed fine, but the fancy men’s clothing stores upstairs turned into wading pools. Then my favourite—water pouring out of pot lights in the ceiling (with the lights still on :-)

Eventually we took the skytrain home to find Pya Thai Road completely flooded on one side (big avenue running under the skytrain.) As for the side street leading up to our Soi—a bit of a lost cause. I rolled up my pants as high as they could go and waded in to my knees. (Best not to think about what’s in the water. Black. Thick. Ugh!)

On the upside—last time we saw a Bangkok flood we were living in a tiny building on a tiny Soi and woke up to find a foot of water in our lobby. This time at least we’re on the 7th floor!

Sadly I have no photos. Where’s that Nokia Multimedia Computer when you need it :-)

Carnival of the Mobilists #48

Carnival of the MobilistsThis installment of the Carnival of the Mobilists (#48) is hosted by Technokitten (Helen Keegan.) This edition is packed full of Mobile 2.0 posts including a lively debate on MobHappy regarding mobile advertising and content repurposing by the likes of Opera. There’s also a link to a post by Adrian Cummings of the Mobile Games Blog who has just embarked on a journey from J2ME to Flash Lite.

Carnival of the Mobilists #43

Yeah, yeah, you’ve probably read it by now but i’m just getting to it.

Carnival of the MobilistsThis installment of the Carnival of the Mobilists (#43) is hosted by 3-Lib. I’d never been to 3-Lib but I quite like the ‘retro-ness’ of it. Can’t remember the last time I saw a technology site that was not blog or CMS based. Lots of resources on the site including some good beginner guides to Series 60.
